8 Skincare Mistakes You’re Probably Making

Skincare and beauty products are often thought of as the building blocks of self-care, so lets talk about them! Taking care of yourself means taking care of your body. Skincare is part of that practice. Many think that washing your face and loading on products is enough, but are you making skincare mistakes that are actually hurting you?

Let’s talk about which skincare mistakes you are making and how you can fix them.

Not Washing Your Pillowcase Often

This may seem obvious to you, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t think to switch out their pillowcases often! At night, we sweat, drool and rub off all the junk from the day onto our pillowcases. As we move our faces around, the oils from our hair which have soaked into the pillow case begin to seep into our pores and clog them. It is important for our skin that we wash our pillow cases frequently to avoid this build up from irritating our skin! I would recommend washing your pillowcase at least once a week!

Using Toxic Products

So you’ve tried every product out there and they just aren’t working. Chances are, you are trying products that contain toxic ingredients that are no good for any skin type! Your skin absorbs these products right into your blood stream and redistributes them throughout your body. This is one of the biggest skincare mistakes you could make!

Look out for some of these toxic ingredients when purchasing new skincare:

  • Parabens
  • Fragrance (!!!)
  • Phthalates
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and/or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • BHT
  • Retinyl palmitate and Retinol (aka, Vitamin A)
  • Lead
  • Formaldehyde

Some of my favourite clean beauty products includes Teami Blends (Use my Code AINSLEY20 for a 20% discount!) and Summer Fridays. You can also check out this blog post by The Fox & She for more information on the toxic ingredients listed above!

You’re Touching Your Face Too Often

Your mom always told you to stop picking at your face, why didn’t you listen to her?! Although difficult as many of us do this subconsciously, touching your face isn’t all that great for your skin! All the bacteria we touch through the day will transfer from our hands onto our faces. This can be an even bigger problem if you tend to pick at acne since you are opening small wounds giving the bacteria quicker access into your body.

Not Washing Your Hands First

Before washing your face or applying skincare products it is important to wash your hands well first. Just the same as the skincare mistake listed above, we don’t want the bacteria we pick up throughout the day to transfer to our faces. Even though cleansers are meant to clean your skin, if you don’t wash your hands first you could be spreading dirt around (have you ever rubbed soap in your hands and realized just how dirty the water gets when you rinse it off?!)

You Don’t Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen for your face protects your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays (yes, even when it is cloudy out)! It prevents discolouration, dark spots, and premature aging just to name a few things! If you want your face to stay healthy for longer, sunscreen is the answer!

You’re Changing Products Too Often

New skincare products can be so exciting! Something new that you really want to try out. Your old products just aren’t cutting it for you. Put aside the toxic products for now, when you switch up your skincare products often, your body has little time to adjust. It takes a lot longer for products to bring on changes than you expect, so maybe a product would do your skin wonders if you gave it 3 months, but you’re switching so often you’re just confusing your body. Remember when products are going through testing, they have people try them out for several weeks or even months before they can determine if its effects are accurate! Try finding one product and unless it irritates your skin too much, keep to it for a longer period of time to truly test it out!

You Aren’t Drinking Enough Water

Drinking enough water helps your body to flush out toxins, heals your skin faster and keeps you from getting dehydrated. Im sure there are many, many other benefits that pertain to skincare in itself, but I won’t bore you with that. This is just your reminder to DRINK YOUR WATER, GIRL! Seriously, there are so many benefits to water, just drink it!

You Don’t Clean Your Phone Screen

Here’s the big finale. Clean your phone screen! I know its not something we think about, but we are on our phones all the time. Our hands are all over the screens and we bring them into the washroom (don’t lie, we all do it!). Our phones are always laying around somewhere collecting dirt, dust and oils. Ew. Then the phone rings and we put that phone right up to our face. That’s all I have to say about that. Clean your phone screen!

I hope that learning these skincare mistakes that you may be making can help you find a better balance for your skin and solve your skincare issues!
